How to Survive as the Diamond Industry Shrinks

08 march 2017

(diamonds.net) - The diamond trade remains under pressure, and further contraction of the market is expected this year. Apart from being squeezed by high rough costs and declining polished prices, dealers lament there are too many players chasing the same orders. Simply put, the market is saturated with polished suppliers, and consequently with goods for which there is insufficient demand. Manufacturers and dealers are caught between the mining and retail sectors. They carry the burden of supporting industry inventory levels, as the supply of rough diamonds is projected to rise this year, while jewelry retailers continue to consolidate and make do with less stock.

Talk of a bad bank in India

07 march 2017

(economist.com) - If you owe a bank a hundred dollars, it is your problem. If you owe a hundred million, it is the bank’s problem. If you are one of many tycoons borrowing billions to finance dud firms, it is the government’s problem. That is roughly the situation India finds itself in today. Its state-owned banks extended credit to companies that are now unable to repay. Like the firms they have injudiciously lent to, many banks are barely solvent. Almost 17% of all loans are estimated to be non-performing; state-controlled banks are trading at a steep discount to book value. After years of denial, India’s government seems belatedly to have grasped the threat to the wider economy. Plans are being floated to create a “bad bank” that would house banks’ dud loans, leaving the original lenders in better shape. The idea is a good one, but it must be properly implemented and is only the starting-point for broader reforms.

Alrosa to Enter Branded Jewelry Arena as Forevermark Reaches Milestone

06 march 2017

(idexonline.com) - Russian diamond mining giant Alrosa appears to be among industry players which have been impressed with the success of De Beers' Forevermark diamond brand. Alrosa plans to start marketing Russian diamonds with pilot programs in several major markets, according to CEO Andrey Zharkov in comments made at last week's International Diamond Week in Israel. It will be the first time that the company has ever run such a project as it seeks to test the waters. Zharkov's comments seemed all the prescient, coming just days before De Beers announced that Forevermark has passed a milestone, now being available in more than 2,000 retail outlets worldwide.

From Tulips to Diamonds – Trading Platforms

03 march 2017

(ehudlaniado.com) - At the start of this series of articles, we looked at the Tulip Bulb Mania, which in the eyes of some is a cautionary tale that shows why a commodity market for diamonds is not feasible. I beg to differ. In the articles so far, I described what would be needed to create a market for diamonds as a possible asset for wealth preservation. Today, I’d like to add an advanced component. For diamonds to actually be an asset for wealth preservation, we need many things to happen. Besides the pre-conditions listed above, investors would need a place where they can buy diamonds and sell them. Diamond trading platforms.
