Pallinghurst wins 61% support for controversial Gemfields bid
20 june 2017
(miningmx.com) - Pallinghurst Resources has claimed enough support to make its $150m all-share offer for Gemfields unconditional with just over 60% of total shareholders in the UK-listed coloured gemstones miner and marketer supporting the proposed transaction. “As for 5.40pm on June 16, Pallinghurst has received valid acceptances in respect of 77,888,324 Gemfields shares representing approximately 14.16% of the existing issued share capital of Gemfields,” the company said in an announcement to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange today. Including the 47% of shares Pallinghurst already owns in Gemfields, total acceptances had come in at 61.25% to date. “With this acceptance into the Gemfields offer, ahead of the general meeting, Pallinghurst now exceeds the minimum level of support required for the offer,” said Johannes van Niekerk, a spokesman for the company. “The other notices of irrevocable support in addition remain available to vote in favour of the offer at the Gemfields general meeting.”

It was “actively engaged in discussions with Fosun Gold regarding a possible competing offer for the entire issued and to be issued share capital of the company,” it said.

Beyond the trading prospects for buyers and suppliers, the shows provided a snapshot of the diamond and jewelry market. As I spoke with industry leaders and members of the trade, and attended the many impressive seminars on offer at the JCK show, I found the market in a better position than it was a year ago – despite its lingering challenges. After a week in Las Vegas attending the JCK, Luxury and Couture shows, here are the underlying factors currently influencing the market.
Technology in Diamonds – Retail
16 june 2017
(ehudlaniado.com) - The growing influence of the millennial generation on diamond jewelry sales has forced retailers to find new strategies and technologies to adapt to the changing way people are shopping. For the most part, retail diamond jewelry sales are still largely conducted face-to-face, with a relationship established between a salesperson and a customer. However, this is changing quickly, and change has necessitated some new tools for both buyer and seller to influence the interaction. In my final series of articles exploring how technology has come to influence our changing industry, let’s take a look at some of the breakthroughs being used in diamond jewelry retailing.
E-Commerce Site Memo Lets Consumers Try Before They Buy
15 june 2017
(nationaljeweler.com) - Debra LaBudde has decades of experience advising companies on new and unexploited markets. So when she founded her own company last year, she focused on what she contends is just such an opportunity: fine jewelry. “I think there’s kind of an untapped market, believe it or not, for fine jewelry,” LaBudde explained. “(I saw) an interesting opportunity in the marketplace that, in my mind, hasn’t been well served, and that ultimately could create a larger market.” Memo is LaBudde’s answer to what she feels is missing in single-channel retail models—the tactile, personal access to jewelry that is found in a brick-and-mortar experience, coupled with the convenience and accessibility of online shopping. Memo’s “complimentary home try-on” period bridges this gap.
